Welcome to GOLDEN STATE OUTDOORS!  An online photo album dedicated to the California, the Golden State, Sportsman. On these pages you'll find that the Golden State does indeed have some of the finest hunting and fishing opportunities in the country. Proving that California is more than expensive real estate, movie stars, Hollywood and "Surf's up Dude!"

The awesome Sacramento River that winds it's way lazily down the valley teems with King (Chinook) Salmon in the fall. Who needs to go to Alaska when Salmon to 50 pounds or more are boated every year? Steelhead, a sea run Rainbow Trout, follow the Salmon up the rivers looking for an easy meal of Salmon eggs. Those scrappy fish are the quarry of many seasoned fishermen as well as the Striped Bass. Yes indeed, Striped Bass find the Steelhead very tasty! Topwater plugging for Stripers in the California Delta or along the Feather River is a heart stopping event! There's nothing better than having a 25 pound Striper explode on a popping topwater bait and making like a nuclear submarine peeling the line from your reel! When the acrobatic American Shad makes it way into the river system in the spring your tackle can surely get a workout! Shad average 2 to 3 pounds with a big fish being in the 6 pound range. These fish can burn the drag up on light tackle in an afternoon. Plus, HUNDRED fish days are NOT uncommon!

Our clear reservoirs hold Largemouth, Spotted and Smallmouth Bass. Shasta Lake and Lake Oroville are known for the numbers of Spotted Bass that can be caught in a days fishing. The Golden State's largest natural lake, Clear Lake, has produced record winning limits of bass and is a lake where on any cast you may land a 10 pound plus Largemouth. The California Delta is another awesome bass fishery, especially if flippin' and pitchin' is your technique of choice. It's not uncommon to see a 5 fish limit tipping the scales at over 25 pounds!

Being one of the largest rice producing regions in the world and sitting in the center of the Pacific Flyway. The northern part of the Sacramento Valley boasts world class waterfowl hunting both on public and private lands. The flooded rice fields make the perfect wintering habitat for ducks and geese. At dusk, it's an awesome sight to see thousands of ducks and geese winging their way down the valley and over the Sutter Buttes.

Let's talk Turkey. Turkey you say? Yes and we're not talking the wingless kind either. Turkeys are actually becoming a nuisance in some suburban areas! Pheasant, Chukar, Bobwhite and Valley Quail are available to the upland game bird hunter on State and Federal Reverses as well as Private Hunting Preserves. Better have your eye and plenty of shells when you're after Mourning Doves. These miniature jets of the sky will have you burning up your ammo in no time!

The majestic and scenic Sierra Nevada Mountains are home the nomadic and wily Blacktailed Deer. They will put the best deer hunter's skills to the test. The northeastern corner of California houses  the crafty Mule deer whose big ears can hear a hunter for miles. Roaming those same high northeastern plains is the keen-eyed Prong-Horned Antelope. After some really BIG game? Better have a bear tag along with you while deer hunting,  you may just come upon a big and burly California Black bear. Roaming the foothills of the Coastal Range mountains up and down California are Wild Pigs. Most are domesticated pigs that have gone "wild" over the last 150 years or so. But now and then you come across a big ol' wiry Wild Russian Boar that has been transplanted into the area. These Wild Russian Boars get along with their previously domesticated cousins. Which produce some pretty mean offspring! Any of them make for great table fare.
